Clear create amazing technicolour T-shirt for Just Jack video
Cheeky chappy popsters, Just Jack, release their second single, ‘Glory Days’. Clear (Post Production) created an ever-changing T-shirt for the new video.
The video sees the lead singer strolling through the backstreets of a British town. As he sings directly to the camera, the graphics on his T-shirt change according to the content of his lyrics. Therapy Films Jon Richie came up with the idea of having Just Jack's vocalist singing to camera wearing the multi-faceted T-shirt.
Most of the effects were achieved in-camera. Just Jack would sing an entire verse, over and over again, each time wearing a different T-shirt. This way, the editor could cut between the T-shirts in time to the lyrics. The process was very time-consuming so the background in each shot got darker and darker as the shoot day progressed.
Clear’s Flame artist, Tim Davies, devised a solution to this problem: he decided to use just one take of the background (ie – with just one T-shirt) to ensure consistent lighting across the shot. Consequently, Tim and his team had to rotoscope Just Jack from the other takes (with their unique and varying T-shirts) and composite him into the take with the consistently-lit background. This solution also helped ease the cuts between T-shirts/takes.
The concept was further tightened in post production when the Flame team designed and composited new graphics for some of the T-shirts. Tim also created a range of 3d planets that whiz around Just Jack when he’s ‘spinning with stars like in the planetarium’. Finally the addition of some post camera moves continued the flow of the video throughout.
