Having recently acquired the rights to Robert Tressell's classic novel, 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists', Penguin Modern Classics have commissioned Jonathan Williams to create a cover illustration.
'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' is the first great English novel about the class war. It tells the story of a group of painters and decorators who are oppressed and downtrodden by an exploitative capitalist system.
The workers are joined one day by Owen, a journeyman prophet with a vision of a just society. In his spirited attacks, Owen attempts to rouse the workers from their political slumber. They cling to the security of their miserable wage, fearing that the only alternative is destitution, illness and death.
I've tried to give the worker an emaciated Christ-like aura, silently enduring the harrassment and intimidation of his overseer and employer. His capacity for suffering borders on the masochistic.
The image has been drawn by hand, then edited and coloured using Photoshop.
I'm inspired by prophetic figures (like Tony Benn and George Galloway) who speak out against a tide of materialism and dishonesty - people who hold consistently to their beliefs in a time of politcal and spiritual opportunism.
