Northampton business in line for Champions award

Bambino Mio, based in Brixworth, has been named as a finalist in the British Small Business Champions (BSBC) 2008, Central Area.

Originally set up as a mail order company Bambino Mio products are now stocked in the UK by national stores such as John Lewis, Mothercare, Babies R Us and Boots. Bambino Mio has also built a strong network of exclusive international distributors in over 60 countries.

When Guy Schanschieff spent a year travelling he aimed to come back with an idea for starting his own business. A chance conversation with an American about nappy laundry services in New York and later seeing lots of nappy delivery vans driving round Australia led to him starting a nappy laundry service on his return to the UK. It was not as successful as he hoped but it convinced him that reusable nappies had potential and in 1997 he started Bambino Mio – in a market dominated by the disposable industry.

Bambino Mio is currently working closely with Northampton City Council to promote the Northampton Real Nappy Campaign and is taking part in the Real Nappy Road Show for Real Nappy Week. The business also supports its local maternity unit at Northampton General Hospital by exhibiting at the annual Northampton Baby show.

Bambino Mio, plus the other five BSBC 2008 area finalists, will be at the BSBC 2008 central area awards dinner on 26 June at the Welcombe Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon, when one of them will be announced as the Small Business Central Area Champion 2008, winning a cash prize of £1,000 to be spent to the benefit of their business.

This business will then go forward to compete against the other five champions from across the UK, for the title of national champion 2008 whose prizes include £10,000 also to be spent on their business.

BSBC 2008 central area is sponsored by FSB Independent Financial Services, based in Stonehouse, with a network of qualified financial advisers across the UK. Paul Baker, managing director, who acted as a BSBC 2008 central area judge said: “As always BSBC attracted a very high calibre of entries, and after the interviews were completed the judges deliberated long and hard to choose the six finalists and the area champion.

"By sponsoring these awards, IFS is making a positive contribution towards raising the profile of the small business sector and its future growth which is so vital to the economy and also supporting the Federation of Small Businesses' role in its work of representing small business.”

BSBC was founded by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in 2002. It is the only national awards scheme solely for small businesses. Its aims are to celebrate and heighten the profile of the UK's small businesses.

The FSB exists to protect and promote the interests of the self-employed and all those who run their own business. It is the UK's largest business organisation, with 215,000 members.

There are over four million small businesses in the UK, which accounts for 99% of all UK businesses, employing 58% of the private sector workforce and contributing 50% of the UK GDP.
