Jonathan Chadwick gives Website Artistic Type Makeover

As a designer, designing something for yourself can sometimes be more challenging than designing for a client. There's no definite brief, deadline or fee's for a start.

When the Artistic Type website was originally set up a couple of years ago, it was all 'me', 'me', 'me' - a platform to voice my personal crusade against the digitisation and de-humanising of everything design related.

It also gave me somewhere to present my illustration work. I began to recognise recently though that it maybe wasn't very user or business friendly.

For example, images whilst obviously important, were perhaps presented at too big a scale. And did viewers really want to know how I'd produced something or just what I'd produced?

The website has now had a bit of a spruce up - to more clearly show off what I've been working on. I've re-catogorised my work, highlighting my scraperboard illustrations and then later demonstrating how they've been employed on packaging for example.

I've also displayed my illustrations in a way that allows for more images to be viewed at once, in a gallery format. They can also be expanded, displaying the project details only when the viewer wants them.

Stylistically, the colour palette and header graphic have been amended too. I wanted the whole site to feel more 'organic', representative of a more 'hands on' approach. I've presented the images as though they are postcards or sheets of paper on a work surface to further illustrate their hand crafted nature. Deepening the background colour also appears to 'lift' the images.
